How to take a headshot that looks professional

The guides behind the photo: where to stand, what to wear, how to hold your face, and what a professional headshot actually costs.

A professional headshot is not a matter of equipment. It is a short list of decisions — where the light comes from, what is behind you, what you wear, and what your face is doing — and each one is explained on its own page.

Every guide here is written for someone photographing themselves with a phone, because that is how most people get a photo good enough to generate a set from.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to take a good headshot at home?

Ten minutes for the photo, if the light is right. The setup — a window, a plain wall, the phone propped at eye level — takes a few minutes, and the shooting is a few dozen frames. What takes longer is deciding what to wear.

Do I need a friend to take the photo?

It helps for framing, but it is not necessary: prop the phone at eye level, use the timer, and take more frames than you think you need. A tripod or a stack of books is the whole requirement.

What is the most common mistake in a self-taken headshot?

Camera below eye level. A phone held at chest height looks up at the face, which widens the jaw and makes anyone look tired. Raising it to eye level fixes more than any other single change.
