Choosing a headshot
If you generate a set, you have a dozen good options and no way to choose. The answer is to choose for the destination, not for the photo.
Match the photo to where it goes
A headshot is chosen for a context. A corporate directory wants the plain, composed version; a personal site can carry the warmer one; a social profile benefits from the frame where you look most like yourself.
- LinkedIn and directories: plain background, business dress, composed.
- CV and applications: the same as LinkedIn, and consistent with it.
- Company team page: the version that matches your colleagues' photos.
- Social profiles: the warmest, most relaxed frame in the set.
- Press and speaker bios: high resolution, plain background.
How to choose from a set
The temptation is to pick the most flattering frame, which is often the least representative one. The better test is recognition: would someone who has met you once pick you out from this photo?
Then check the technical basics — both eyes lit, a clean silhouette, no distracting background — and check it at the size it will be displayed, not at 100%.
- Would someone who met you once recognise you?
- Are both eyes lit and visible?
- Is the silhouette clear against the background?
- Does it still work at 100 px?
- Ask one person who knows you; ignore everyone else.
When to use more than one
Using two photos across different platforms is fine and common: a formal one for professional contexts and a warmer one for social. What matters is that each platform is internally consistent — the same photo on LinkedIn, your CV and your company directory.
If you change your photo, change it everywhere at once. A mismatch between a directory and a profile photo is more noticeable than either photo on its own.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the best headshot?
Choose for the destination first — a plain, composed portrait for directories and CVs, a warmer frame for social. Then check the technical basics: both eyes lit, a clear silhouette, and legible at the size it will be displayed.
Should I use the most flattering photo?
Not if it is the least representative one. The test that matters is recognition: someone who has met you once should be able to pick you out. A photo that looks like a different person causes hesitation in person.
Can I use different headshots on different platforms?
Yes — a formal one for professional contexts and a warmer one for social. What matters is consistency within each platform, so your LinkedIn, CV and company directory all show the same photo.
How often should I update my headshot?
Every two to three years, or whenever your appearance changes noticeably — a different hair length, glasses, or a significant change in weight. A photo that no longer matches you is more noticeable than a slightly dated one.
