Google Business Profile photos

For a local business, the Google listing is often the first thing a customer sees — before the website, and instead of it.

What each image slot wants

A Google Business Profile has a logo slot, a cover photo and a gallery. The logo is square and is displayed in a circle in some placements; the cover is landscape and appears at the top of the listing. Both have minimum sizes, and both look wrong when the aspect ratio is not respected.

The gallery is where the value is. Google's own guidance is that listings with photos get significantly more requests for directions and clicks to the site than listings without.

  • Logo: square, at least 720 x 720 px, cropped to a circle in some views.
  • Cover: landscape, 1024 x 576 px or larger.
  • Gallery: interior, exterior, team, products, at 1200 x 900 px or larger.
  • Keep the format simple — JPG or PNG, no heavy compression.

The images a local business should have

Google's own recommendation is to add photos that answer the questions a visitor would ask at the door: what does the place look like, who works here, what do you sell. That translates into a short list that covers almost every local business.

  • Exterior, in daylight, so people can find the entrance.
  • Interior, showing the space and the atmosphere.
  • Team portraits — the images that make a business local.
  • Products or services, cleanly shot on a plain background.
  • One image per team member, consistently styled.
Google reviews the images and rejects those that are irrelevant, heavily edited or stock. Real photos of the actual business perform better and are what the policy expects.

Team photos on a listing

Team portraits are the images that convert a local listing into a place with people in it. They are also the ones businesses never have, because photographing the team needs a session nobody schedules.

Applying one generated style to photos each person already has produces a consistent team gallery for the listing and for the website, without closing the shop for an afternoon.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size should Google Business Profile photos be?

The logo should be square at 720 x 720 px or larger, the cover 1024 x 576 px or larger, and gallery photos 1200 x 900 px or larger. Respect the aspect ratio for each slot, because Google crops what does not fit.

Which photos should a local business add?

Exterior, interior, team and product images. Google's own guidance is that listings with photos get considerably more engagement, and the images that matter most are the ones that answer questions a visitor would ask at the door.

Can I use edited photos on a Google listing?

Clean, well-lit photos of the real business are fine, and background replacement on a product shot is normal commercial practice. What Google rejects is irrelevant, heavily edited or stock imagery that does not represent the business.

How do I get team photos for a local listing?

Apply one generated style to photos each person already has. A group session means closing the business, which is why most listings never get team photos at all.
