TikTok Shop product photos

TikTok Shop sells from a moving feed, so the main image has to survive a tiny thumbnail and the secondary images have to survive a scroll.

What TikTok Shop requires on the main image

TikTok Shop follows the same convention as the other big marketplaces: a square image, the product alone on a plain background, no text, no logos, no promotional badges and no borders. It is the image that appears in search results and in the product card under a video.

Because the card is small, the product needs to fill the frame. A photo with a lot of empty space around a small product is technically compliant and commercially useless.

  • Square, at least 600 px on the short side — larger is safer, since TikTok serves the same image at several sizes.
  • Plain or white background, one product, nothing else in the frame.
  • No text overlays, no watermarks, no price badges, no collage.
  • Consistent across the listing: the same product, the same angle, the same light as the secondary images.

Secondary images do the selling

TikTok shoppers decide fast and they buy from video, which means the still images have to answer the questions a video does not: what is it made of, how big is it, what comes in the box, how does it look in use.

This is where vertical lifestyle shots earn their place. TikTok's product pages show a vertical gallery, so a 4:5 or 9:16 lifestyle image fits the page better than a square one, and it gives the buyer the context the white cut-out deliberately leaves out.

  • Shot 1: the compliant white main image.
  • Shot 2 to 4: the product in use, on a real surface, in vertical format.
  • Shot 5: scale — in a hand, next to a common object.
  • Shot 6: what is in the box, laid out flat.

One session, two formats

The practical trick is to photograph the product once, on a plain surface, with enough space around it for both a square crop and a tall crop. Zenith AI – Product Photo then produces the white-background version for the main image and lifestyle versions for the gallery, and you export each at the crop TikTok wants.

For sellers with a large catalogue, that is the difference between listing ten products a day and listing ten a week.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size images does TikTok Shop need?

Square, at least 600 px on the short side for the main image, and larger is better — 1000 px or more keeps the product sharp when TikTok serves it in a small card. Secondary images can be vertical, which suits the product page gallery.

Can the main image have a coloured background?

The main image should be the product on a plain background with nothing else in frame. Coloured and lifestyle backgrounds belong in the gallery images, where they help the buyer picture using the product.

Do I need video as well as photos?

TikTok Shop sells through video, so a short product clip is worth having, but the still images are what the buyer checks before paying. They answer the detail questions a 15-second clip cannot.

Can I reuse Amazon photos on TikTok Shop?

Usually yes for the main image, since both want a square white-background shot. The gallery is where they diverge: Amazon rewards infographics and detail shots, while TikTok Shop rewards vertical lifestyle images.
