Walmart Marketplace product photos

Walmart's standards are close to Amazon's, with one difference that matters: how much of the frame the product has to fill.

The main image standard

Walmart asks for a square main image of at least 1000 x 1000 px, on a pure white background, showing the product alone. The product should fill most of the frame — Walmart's guidance is roughly 85% of the image — with no props, no text and no additional products.

That last rule catches out sellers who reuse a styled shot from their website. A styled hero image is fine on your own store; on Walmart it belongs in the secondary images.

  • Square, 1000 x 1000 px or larger. Walmart accepts up to 2200 px.
  • Pure white background, RGB 255,255,255 — not off-white, not light grey.
  • Product fills about 85% of the frame, centred, with even margins.
  • No text, no badges, no watermarks, no props, no additional products.

Secondary images: where the detail goes

Walmart allows a set of additional images per item, and this is where you answer the questions that the clean main image deliberately avoids: scale, texture, what is included, how it is used.

Walmart shoppers are often comparing the same product across several listings, so a secondary image that shows the product next to something familiar — a hand, a ruler, a standard object — measurably reduces returns.

  • In-use or in-context shots, on a real surface, in real light.
  • A scale reference, so the buyer is not guessing at size.
  • Contents of the box, laid out, for anything that ships with accessories.
  • A detail shot of the material or finish, because that is what people zoom in on.

Getting a compliant main image from a phone photo

The two hard parts of the Walmart standard are the pure-white background and the framing. Zenith AI – Product Photo does both: it removes the background to clean white, then recomposes the product so it fills the frame without clipping.

That is the difference between a photo that gets suppressed for a grey background and one that competes in the grid on the strength of the product.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size images does Walmart Marketplace require?

At least 1000 x 1000 px, square, with the product on a pure white background. Walmart accepts images up to 2200 px, and larger images are worth uploading because they zoom better on the product page.

How much of the frame should the product fill on Walmart?

Around 85%. That is Walmart's guidance for the main image, and it is stricter than most channels — a product that fills half the frame reads as a small, low-value item in the search grid.

Can I use a photo with a shadow on Walmart?

A soft, natural contact shadow is generally fine and helps the product look grounded rather than floating. A hard, coloured or directional shadow is not, and neither is any background that is not white.

Do I need different images for Walmart and Amazon?

The main image can usually be the same, because both want a square white-background shot with the product filling the frame. The secondary sets diverge: Walmart shoppers respond to scale and in-use images, Amazon shoppers to infographics and detail.
