Product photos for your website

A marketplace tells you what an image must look like. Your own store lets you decide — which is an opportunity and a risk, because nothing is enforced.

The three image types a store needs

A product page needs a hero image that sells the product, a grid image that works at thumbnail size, and detail images that answer questions. They have different jobs and often different crops.

The hero can be a styled scene, because it is large and it sets the tone. The grid image has to work at 300 px wide next to other products, which usually means a cleaner background and a consistent product scale across the catalogue.

  • Hero: styled, large, sets the tone for the product page.
  • Grid: consistent scale and background across the catalogue.
  • Detail: texture, materials, contents, scale reference.
  • Lifestyle: the product in use, for the page and for social.

Consistency is the whole advantage

On a marketplace, the platform's grid imposes consistency on you. On your own store, nothing does — which is why so many small shops have a product grid where every image is a different size, on a different background, in different light.

Fix it by standardising the grid image: same background, same product scale, same light. Keep the styled images for the hero and for editorial pages, where variety helps rather than hurts.

  • Standardise the grid image across the catalogue.
  • Keep product scale identical, not just the aspect ratio.
  • Reserve styled photography for heroes and editorial.
  • Update images when the product changes — a store has no excuse for stale photos.

Producing a store's worth of images

Zenith AI – Product Photo exports the same photo as a white cut-out, a transparent PNG and a generated scene, which covers the grid, the hero and the transparent use cases — a store's product page, a comparison table, an email header.

Shoot the catalogue once in a fixed setup, generate the versions, and the store gets the consistency a marketplace enforces without the marketplace's rules.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size should product photos be on my website?

Export at 1000 px or more on the long side and let the site downscale. Use a consistent aspect ratio across the catalogue — square or 4:5 — so the grid does not jump around as it loads.

Should my website use white-background product photos?

For the grid, yes — a consistent, clean background makes a catalogue readable. For the hero and editorial images, a styled scene sells the product better, because it shows context rather than just the object.

Do I need different images for my website and Amazon?

Not different shoots, but different crops and backgrounds. Amazon requires a white main image with the product filling the frame; your site can use the styled version. Both come from the same original photo.

How do I make my product grid look consistent?

Standardise the grid image: one background, one product scale, one light direction, one aspect ratio. Consistency in the grid is what makes a small store look professional, and it is easier to maintain with a fixed setup.
