Do I need an app to manage a card collection?
Not for a small collection — a spreadsheet works. Once the collection runs to hundreds of cards, or once you want to know what it is worth, the identification and valuation work is the part worth automating.
What should a card app do?
Identify a card from a photo, return the parallel as well as the player, attach a value based on recent sales, and let you organise and search what you own. Anything less means you are still doing the hard part by hand.
Is a spreadsheet better than an app?
For a small collection and a fixed set of cards, yes — it is free and you control it. It stops being better as soon as you need identification or current values, because both require data you would have to enter and maintain yourself.
